KUCHING (September 1): A new 12-story, 200-room hotel will be part of a 400 million ringgit land development project involving Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) and UDA Holdings Bhd (UDA) in Jalan Datuk Merican Salleh here.

Located about three miles from downtown and near Pending Heights, the project will involve 12.6 acres of land.

The project will also include two blocks of a 21-story high-rise apartment complex with swimming pools, gyms and play areas; office buildings and commercial premises with two to six floors.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the facilities to be developed under the project could complement the state’s tourism industry.

“With the facilities built by the project, particularly the hotel, this could accommodate visitors and tourists coming to Sarawak.

“This project would also change the landscape of Kuching for the better, and could somehow help Sarawak regain its economy that has been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic,” Abang Johari said before witnessing the signing of the Memorandum. Agreement between SEDC and UDA today.

The project start date has not been decided due to the extended Recovery Motion Control Order.

Abang Johari also said that he was confident that UDA, with its 40-year track record in property development, could deliver on the project.

He also proposed that UDA study the development of affordable housing developments for expats and oil and gas workers in Bintulu.

The Minister for Business Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, said at the event that, once completed, the project could boost Sarawak’s economy, bringing it closer to its goal of becoming the most developed state by 2030.

“This project would also give opportunities to young women bumiputeras who want to delve into the digital economy, in line with the aspiration of the state,” he said.

In a subsequent press conference, UDA President Datuk Jalaluddin Alias thanked Abang Johari for having confidence in the company to participate in a major development project in the state.

He said he would also seriously look into Abang Johari’s proposal for the Bintulu oil and gas housing project, but stressed that he would have to focus on the new project first, as it is UDA’s first in Sarawak.

“It is a good offer for us and I thank the prime minister. We will seriously investigate it and explore it further.

“But the most important thing now is this first project that moves in Kuching. We thank the prime minister for this project in collaboration with the SEDC, ”he said.
