KUALA LUMPUR: A 54-year-old Korean priest, previously detained on suspicion of sexually abusing disabled people, is expected to be charged in Penang next week.

Bukit Aman CID Director Comm Datuk Huzir Mohamed said six police reports, five in Penang and one in Selangor, have been filed against the suspect.

“The suspect was initially detained on November 23 and in preventive detention until November 30.

“He was quarantined until December 8, as he had close contact with a detainee who tested positive for Covid-19.

“He was arrested again and in pretrial detention until December 18. He will be charged in Butterworth, Penang on Monday (December 21),” he said in a statement on Thursday (December 17).

The victims were five men, aged between 27 and 40, disabled and members of a deaf association, he added.

“The suspect came to Malaysia at the invitation of the founder of the deaf association to teach the Bible since 1998,” he said.

Comm Huzir said initial investigations revealed that the suspect met the victims while attending religious classes and church activities in Penang and Selangor.

“The victims alleged that the suspect abused them by hugging them, kissing them on the lips and rubbing their private parts against them.

“The abuse incidents reportedly took place between 2011 and 2016.

“The victims reported the matter late as the suspect convinced them that he was their leader and they should obey his orders,” he added.

The association had branches in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Melaka, Perak and Sarawak, Comm Huzir said.
