Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman says he wants Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum to lead an exciting trio of arrivals in January.

Koeman previously revealed his interest in his fellow Dutchman, claiming he was on Barça’s target list.

However, he has now spelled out why he thinks the 29-year-old would make a fantastic signing.

He said (through the Daily mirror): “Our interest in Wijnaldum is strong.

“I wanted to bring him here in the summer because he has the ability to make fantastic runs from midfield and show up in the area at the right times.

“I am convinced that he can really contribute something to the team. But the economic situation of Barcelona was known in his club ”.

Wijnaldum and Koeman they worked together, while the latter was director of the Netherlands team. In fact, the Reds midfielder has a fantastic record for international goals, scoring 15 times in 61 games.

However, Barcelona could not afford a raid this summer, as the club announced losses of 97 million euros (88 million pounds). The club also blamed the coronavirus pandemic for a revenue drop of 203 million euros (184 million pounds).

The interest in Wijnaldum comes as the midfielder’s contract draws to a close. He has entered the final year of his contract with Anfield, with no sign of an extension on the horizon.

As such, the Spanish giants could get a cheaper rate in January or agree to a prior contract with the midfielder.

“But right now I can’t know how the club’s finances are in January so I have to wait and see.”

About Depay, the coach added: “Everything was ready, but due to LaLiga rules we knew we had to sell first before we could sign our goals.
