In the past two seasons, Diogo Jota made 85 appearances for Wolverhampton Wanderers, scoring 26 goals and 13 assists.
The previous season, the 23-year-old Portuguese forward’s first in England with the Wolves in the Championship, he made 46 appearances in all competitions, scored 18 goals and added six assists.
He is now Liverpool’s player, and in his first league appearance with the Reds he showed why the club hired him, not that coach Jürgen Klopp is surprised.
“I am very happy for him,” Klopp said after Monday’s win over Arsenal. “It is very difficult to improve a team like ours, to bring players that fit exactly, but I have known Diogo Jota for some time.
“It’s been on my list for two or three years, but it has to be the right time. So I’m really happy he’s here now and it’s been a great start. “
Liverpool have shown in recent seasons that they don’t just go out and buy any player, they track him down. For a long, long time. Whether it’s the club’s first choice on the job or the second or third, they will have been following any new signings for years.
It’s no wonder, then, that it’s no different for Jota, that they’ve been watching him since he arrived in England at age 20, and that they’ve watched him closely for the past two seasons in particular.
He has been signed, and for a rather significant fee, because the club believes in his talent and form. Based on his track record, the question was never whether it would have an impact, only when.
