Klopp faces a defensive crisis as point man ready for scans, midfielder also out

Liverpool’s backline problems escalated on Sunday when another central midfielder was injured in a draw at West Bromwich Albion.

Joel Matip was left on the field with another blow with the Reds already short of defensive options.

Jurgen Klopp admitted after the game that the defender’s injury “is not too good.” The Cameroonian international now has a problem with his adductor.

Matip will undergo scans on Monday and the trip to Newcastle United on Wednesday is likely to be missed, according to the Liverpool Echo.

“Joel told me he felt something on his adductor, which is obviously not too good,” Klopp said after the draw the weekend.

“I’m not sure how serious he is right now, but it was serious enough that I had to leave the field.

“It is not the first time a central midfielder has been injured (this season). Of course it is not good.

“I was in very good shape again. We can’t change that and we have to accept it and move on. “

Since arriving in Merseyside in 2016, Matip has missed 61 games through injury.

With Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez out of the game, Klopp faces a real headache. Rhys Williams, 19, is the most likely candidate to start alongside Fabinho at the heart of the defense.

He has made ten first-team appearances for the Reds this season, six of which have come in the Champions League.

Nat Phillips and Billy Koumetio are the other two central defense options available.

Keita will miss the clash against Newcastle

Naby keita

Meanwhile, Klopp has pretty much ruled out the possibility of Naby Keita returning to action this week.

The midfielder is recovering from a muscle injury and missed the game against West Brom.

After the game, Klopp reported on the progress of his recovery. He said: “Naby felt a muscle again.

“We don’t know exactly how long, but it wasn’t ready for today and I don’t think for Wednesday. We will see.”

The Guinea international has presented 11 times for Liverpool so far this campaign.
