KUALA LUMPUR: Police are investigating the possibility that the gold robbery on the Besraya Highway in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, and a similar blatant robbery in Ipoh in August last year, may have been committed by the same group.
Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Saiful Azly Kamaruddin said police have been working hard to determine the identities and determine the modus operandi of the perpetrators.
“The robbery that occurred on Monday is still under investigation. There are some similarities between the two cases, so the KL police CID will contact his counterpart in Perak about the details, ”Saiful Azly said at a press conference today.
He added that it is important that the police establish an effective plan to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
“Maybe we can run a special operation with the cooperation of jewelers and money changers to make sure incidents like these don’t happen again,” he said.
Saiful Azly was then asked about the absence of security escorts when transporting the jewelry shipment in the incident.
“We always advise them to hire security personnel. However, the decision is left to them. Maybe they were used to moving like this (without security escorts), ”Saiful Azly said.
Yesterday it was reported that a gold seller and his friend faced moments of anxiety when they were assaulted by three men armed with machetes after being forced to stop their vehicle on the expressway.
The victims were on their way to distribute jewelry around Kuala Lumpur when their vehicle was blocked by two black Toyota Hiluxes before the three men in ski masks smashed the window, dragged them out of the car and sped off.
The two victims, aged 21 and 47, were abandoned on the side of the road. They were also injured by the broken glass.
Police found the stolen vehicle washed away in Damansara. Brickfields District Police Chief ACP Zairulnizam Mohd Zainuddin @ Hilmi said the case is being investigated under Section 395/397 for armed robbery.
