PETALING JAYA: Nine MPs in Kuala Lumpur warned against a recent announcement by the Ministry of Federal Territories to allow street vendors and small merchants to do business in previously banned parts of the city.

In a joint statement on Thursday (Nov 12), they said the ministry must ensure that the new policy is not abused.

“We welcome the enthusiasm of the minister (Tan Sri Annuar Musa) for being business friendly and bringing business opportunities to those in need.

However, you must ensure that this policy does not further contribute to cleanliness and congestion problems in the city.

“Security must also be of utmost importance in the implementation of this policy,” the statement read.

The Ministry of Federal Territories had agreed to relax the location requirements for issuing licenses to small traders and street vendors in Kuala Lumpur.

Annuar said that those who had lost their job and wanted to start a business could apply for a temporary license from the Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL).

“The license will be issued immediately. I have urged DBKL to be flexible and allow people to operate in locations that were previously off limits.

“As long as the stands don’t obstruct traffic or cause a nuisance to the public, it should be allowed,” he said.

MPs urged that license applications be simplified not only for street vendors but also for other businesses.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has forced the closure of more than 30,000 semi-medium companies across the country.

“The minister should simplify applications to be business-friendly,” the statement said.

Separately, the statement said that they were still waiting for a meeting to be called between Annuar and the KL deputies.

“It has been 16 days since our last statement.

“This meeting is very important for the planning and spending of the DBKL 2021 budget, which will have a great impact on the well-being and well-being of the people of KL,” he said.

The joint statement was signed by Tan Kok Wai (MP from Cheras), Fong Kui Lun (MP from Bukit Bintang), Teresa Kok (MP from Seputeh), Dr. Tan Yee Kew (MP from Wangsa Maju), Lim Lip Eng ( Kepong MP), Fahmi Fadzil (Lembah Pantai MP), Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (Setiawangsa MP), P. Prabakaran (Batu MP) and Hannah Yeoh (Segambut MP).
