PETALING JAYA: The Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (KKMM) has announced five initiatives aimed at helping B40 households, as well as SPM and STPM students, stay connected in 2021.
Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said the initiatives include free WiFi coverage in 130 selected Popular Housing Projects (PRPs) across the country until the end of April 2021.
Coverage will be provided by telecommunications companies Maxis Bhd, Celcom Axiata Bhd, Telekom Malaysia Bhd, U Mobile Sdn Bhd, Digi Telecommunications and Time dotCom.
It is also expected that on January 6, 2021, local telcos will submit a special data package plan for SPM and STPM candidates that will be available until the end of the exam period in April.
More information on the special package plan for exam candidates will be announced at the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and on the websites of the respective telecommunications companies.
The Jaringan Prihatin initiative targeting B40 groups that was announced in the 2021 Budget is expected to be implemented in March 2021 and will include the allocation of a telecommunications credit worth RM180 per person (RM15 per month) or a subsidy to cover part of cost. to buy a smart device.
The free additional 1GB internet data initiative provided by telcos, which was scheduled to end on December 31, will also run until the start of the Jaringan Prihatin subsidy program.
Last but not least, the opening hours of all Pusat Internet Komuniti (PIK) will run from 9:00 to 21:00 every day.
Saifuddin in his statement added that he hopes the initiatives will be beneficial to B40 groups and students to help them prepare for their exams.
