KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government is expected to present its overall direction and priorities, or ‘halatuju’ for the state within a month, says Senior Deputy Minister Datuk Dr. Jeffrey Kitingan.
Kitingan, who is also the state’s agriculture and fisheries minister, said this when asked about his plans for the ministry on Friday (October 2).
“We had a briefing (from the ministry), but it’s not exhaustive, so I don’t want to say anything yet.
“But there will be an announcement from the government, the Chief Minister, on general halatuju, or leadership priorities, within this month.
“For my ministry, let me get the full report and I will give you more details, the medium and long-term goals, etc.,” he told reporters.
The Sabah STAR president, however, said that Sabah is an agricultural state and that there is a lot of potential in the area.
“Obviously, we want to focus on activating all the potentials to eventually become a key producer of agricultural products and become a net exporter.
“Due to our strategic geographic position, we want to ensure that we become a key player in this region.
“At the same time, I want to make sure that the villagers, especially the farmers and fishermen, receive help to increase their income level. These are some of our objectives ”, he added.
On when the rest of the state cabinet is expected to be filled, as well as the nominee assembly positions, he said the cabinet lineup would be named as soon as possible, while the nominated assembly members would be the prerogative of Chief Minister Datuk Hajiji Mohd Noor.
“For our part (Sabah STAR), we have made our proposal (on the vacancies of nominated assemblymen), so you can put this question to him (Hajiji),” Kitingan said.
On ensuring that the food supply and essential items were sufficient during the inter-district movement restrictions in Sabah, he said that the state government had already announced an allocation of RM10 thousand for the food supply in the red zone districts (Lahad Datu , Kunak, Semporna and Tawau) from RM50 thousand Covid -19 relief fund.
“It is already serious in these four districts, so my advice now is not to go out unless necessary.
