SEMATAN: The rulers of Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Malaysia have given good advice to politicians and the people in their decision not to proclaim a state of emergency, says Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
The Chief Minister of Sarawak said he appreciated the decision and thanked the King for his wise words.
“Firstly, he advised politicians to stop politicking, and secondly, that Malaysians should stand together to confront Covid-19. For us in Sarawak, we will follow the King’s advice and continue to fulfill our duties to serve. to the people “he said.
Abang Johari had this to say when speaking to reporters after launching the artificial reef ball deployment in the coastal waters of Sampadi-Tanjung Datu here on Monday (October 26).
Without a proclaimed emergency, Abang Johari said this meant that Sarawak would still face a state election in the coming months when the term of the current state legislature ends next June.
“We are facing a situation where our term will soon end. We have no choice (but to hold elections).
Since an emergency has not been declared, it means that government institutions continue to function normally, “he said.
Abang Johari said it would leave it up to the Election Commission (EC) and health authorities to develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) so that the election takes place in a controlled environment so that it does not cause an increase in Covid-19. cases.
“I hope the EC can see what was done in Singapore and New Zealand and learn from their experience about how they conducted the elections during Covid-19,” he added.
The State Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, also welcomed the decision of the Malaysian king and rulers not to proclaim an emergency.
“From the beginning I felt that what we are facing now is not enough for an emergency to prevail.
“We are not facing a major disaster such as an earthquake or a total collapse of the system. What we are facing is Covid-19 but this is affecting the whole world. That is why we are happy that the King has made this decision,” he said . .
Karim also called on “power-crazy” politicians to heed the King’s advice to stop politicking at this time.
“I hope that those who want to become prime minister or file a vote of no confidence will put all of that aside first.
“We have a bigger problem in Covid-19. There will be other parliamentary sessions where they can cast a vote of no confidence. This time, let’s tackle the immediate problem first,” he said, referring to the next budget session in Parliament.
