KUALA LUMPUR: Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdulllah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah (pix) has granted an early pardon to 13 convicts along with the country’s 63rd National Day today.
According to the Comptroller of the Royal House of Istana Negara, Datuk Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin, the convicts were serving life sentences handed down by the Kuala Lumpur High Court on December 28, 2001 on charges under Article 121 of the Penal Code for waging war or attempting to wage war or complicity to wage war against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong or the Ruler of the State or the Yang di-Pertua Negeri.
“Al-Sultan Abdullah’s consent is exercised under article 42 of the federal Constitution on the advice of the Board of Pardons of the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.
“The 13 convicts serving life sentences since 2001 have requested clemency of their sentences,” he said in a statement today.
Ahmad Fadil said that Al-Sultan Abdullah, on the advice of the Board of Pardons of the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya that met on September 4 last year, had consented to the release of the 13 on a date that was will notify later.
He said that His Majesty, following the advice of the same board in a meeting held on July 24 this year, agreed that the release of the condemned will take effect in August 2020.
Ahmad Fadil said that the early pardon was due to their good behavior while in prison and meant that the 13 returned to society, turned the page and lived a normal life.
“Al-Sultan Abdullah also hopes that the 13 will reflect on their mistakes, repent and evaluate their relationship with God, their family and society,” he said.
His Majesty also hoped that the 13 would be able to live a new life with their loved ones and fulfill their role as citizens dedicated to religion, race and country, Ahmad Fadil said. –Named
