KUALA LUMPUR: The government has been recommended to study in detail every suggestion it has received in order to formulate a national budget that is inclusive, comprehensive and focused on the well-being of the people, the recovery of the country’s economy and slowing the spread of Covid – 19.

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah expressed this hope after granting an audience to Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz in Istana Negara today.

At the hearing, which lasted 70 minutes, the King was briefed on the country’s current economic situation and fiscal prospects, as well as the preparations by the Ministry of Finance to formulate next year’s budget, an effort that began in July and involved 40 participation sessions with more than 2,000 individuals, industry players and politicians.

“The King also expressed his appreciation for the spirit of bipartisanship and consensus shown by the government and all political parties,” the Comptroller of the Royal House of Istana Negara Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said in a statement here.

Also present during the hearing was the Secretary General of the Treasury, Asri Hamidon.

“The King believes that the practice of political maturity, leaving aside partisan or personal interests and differences is very important at this time to guarantee the safety and well-being of the people, as well as that of the country, which has been affected by the Covid- 19 pandemic.

“El Agong said that he also agreed with the culture of syura (consultation), which was encouraged by Islam, as demonstrated by the Malaysian rulers during their special meeting in Istana Negara on October 25,” Asri said.

In this difficult and critical situation, Sultan Abdullah felt that it was more appropriate for the welfare of the general public to come before individual interests.

In this sense, he also expressed the hope that the spirit of consensus for the well-being of the people and the country could continue.
