KUALA LUMPUR: The government will make sure the country has enough Covid-19 vaccines next year even though vaccine maker Pfizer lowered its production target for this year, said Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin (pix) told Dewan Rakyat today.
He said that the current supply chain problems facing Pfizer are for this year only and there should be no problem for the company next year.
He said Pfizer informed them that the company’s production of the vaccine for Malaysia will not be affected.
He said that Pfizer had informed the government that the supply problem will not affect the company’s operation and production in 2021 for Malaysia.
“The country will receive 20% of its Covid-19 vaccines from Pfizer in the first quarter of next year.
“To ensure that there is an adequate supply of the vaccine, the government will not depend on one or two companies to obtain it,” he said in response to a question from Fahmi Fadzil (PH-Lembah Pantai).
Fahmi had asked about the government’s plan in case it faced a last-minute problem in terms of acquiring enough Covid-19 vaccines for the public.
Khairy said the government had decided not to rely on a single producer because it wants to make sure it has an adequate supply of the vaccine.
He said relying on just one supplier could result in the government not getting enough vaccine to vaccinate everyone.
