KOTA BHARU, February 12: A total of 25 police officers, including officers, in Kelantan have been confirmed positive for COVID-19, and nearly 200 others were instructed to self-quarantine due to the pandemic.
Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Shafien Mamat said that being infected with the disease was part of the “sacrifices” of more than 3,000 members of the state’s police force in carrying out their daily duties and responsibilities today.
This, he said, was in addition to having to endure accusations and insults from some people when the police took action against him for violating Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
“During the day we put up barricades and at night we carry out patrols. The challenge for our members is to deal with family problems since we did not apply to leave, ”he told Bernama.
He said there was a time when all the staff in a police station had to be quarantined because one of their colleagues was infected with COVID-19.
“As a result, we had to send replacement members from headquarters to the police station so as not to interrupt its operation,” he added.
Shafien said the public must understand how vulnerable law enforcement personnel are to becoming infected with COVID-19 when doing their duty.
“For example, when we make an arrest and the suspect is a positive suspect for COVID-19, and we don’t know. Since the suspect is arrested and then placed in preventive detention until the suspect is brought to court, the police are at risk of infection and many more, if we are not careful ”, he added.
He said that this was the challenge that the police had to face to safeguard the interests of the people and the country.
As such, he advised members of the police to have a high level of patience while the public watched his actions.
