PETALING JAYA: AG Kalidas Krishnan has been elected as the new Chairman of the Malaysian Bar Council at the organization’s annual meeting today.

He previously served as secretary to the council, a position now taken over by Shahareen Begum, president of the Johor Bar.

Murshidah Mustafa of Kedah Bar has been elected council treasurer.

Surindar Singh retains his place as vice president, having run unopposed.

Kalidas will take over as president from Salim Bashir, who did not offer himself for another term despite the fact that the Law on Legal Professions allowed a lawyer to serve for two years.

“I have reached the end of my term as president and I will not offer myself for re-election,” he told FMT today in a text message.

The annual council meeting was held for the virtual first time due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
