Jurgen Klopp sends message to Rhian Brewster after ‘important lesson’ in Liverpool Community Shield defeat

Jurgen Klopp insists Rhian Brewster’s lack of a penalty at Community Shield will be a learning curve for the young Liverpool forward.

And the Reds boss says he should be to blame for the decision to bring Brewster in solely because of the shooting at Arsenal at Wembley.

Takumi Minamino’s first goal at Liverpool nullified Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s elegant first goal before the Reds fell 5-4 on shots from the spot in London.

Brewster was substituted in the final stages of the game with the intention of taking one of five penalties, but he hit his effort against the top of the crossbar.

Klopp played down the lack of the requested youngster, saying the incident will be good for learning for a player who only turned 20 in April.

“We constantly have to learn and show that we can deal with losses,” Klopp said. “We lost in the competition today and Rhian was part of that.

“So if he had scored and someone else failed, it’s the same. I get it, it’s different when you’re the one.” [who missed] and I’ve been in the same situation as a player and it’s not pleasant at all. It’s just part of the deal.

“With his shooting technique, I don’t think a goalkeeper will ever be in contact with the ball on penalties in his life, but failing like that is possible because he runs all the risk.

“I don’t remember missing a penalty since we’ve been together, but it happened today. It can happen, but dealing with losses in football is always a very, very important lesson and we are not all perfect at that.”

Klopp said the foul will not have a detrimental impact on Brewster in the long run, as Liverpool weigh their next move for a player who has been the subject of half a dozen loan proposals from Premier League clubs.

Klopp added, “This won’t hurt Rhian. If there’s anyone to blame for that, then it’s me, because I made that decision.

“I took Gini Wijnaldum out and put him in for the penalty shoot-out and we wanted him in position because I know he’s a naturally confident guy and he’s a real spiker.

“His penalties are usually very good, but not today. That happens in football and in life. No problem.”

“I rarely share my football experiences with boys because it was too long ago, but I am not the only one who missed a penalty in my life in the team.

“Then the guys pick him up. It’s not about me or making him bigger than he is. He missed a penalty, but all is well. There’s nothing to apologize for. That’s football, no problem.

“We wanted to win the game, but we should have scored in 92 minutes. We didn’t, and that’s why the penalty shoot-out came.

“We scored four times really well and the one we missed was not the worst I’ve seen, it’s a little too high.”
