Jurgen Klopp has described Tottenham as a results machine and warned Liverpool of the threat that José Mourinho represents in their quest to become champions again.
The Liverpool manager has enjoyed a solid record against Mourinho whenever their paths have crossed over the past five years. The last time the Portuguese manager was at Anfield, a 3-1 loss led to him losing his place at Manchester United.
Mourinho returned to management at Tottenham with a point to prove and Klopp is convinced that the Spurs will compete in the title race throughout the season.
Jurgen Klopp is set for possibly Liverpool’s toughest game of the season against Tottenham
Klopp has praised José Mourinho for turning Tottenham into a ‘results machine’ this season
Wednesday’s game will be a major challenge for Liverpool, whose injury crisis shows little sign of abating, and the German wants his team to be prepared.
“It doesn’t surprise me (that people question Mourinho) because that’s the world we live in,” Klopp said. You have been very successful until yesterday. And if you can’t prove it today, people will come for you. I don’t think that surprised him. But he showed skills back.
“It is very impressive what they did at Tottenham, the way they played this year is really good. It turned them into a results machine. They have good performances and if they are not in top form they keep winning. They defend collectively, very impressive.
“At all times when you play Tottenham, it is clear that you have to make sure that Harry Kane is not too involved in the game, which is difficult. It’s the same with Son Heung-min, and the working relationship they have right now, it fit right in. ‘
It will be an emotional night at Anfield following the death of legendary former club manager Gerard Houllier at 73. Liverpool will mark the occasion with a minute of applause for the Frenchman, while the team will sport black armbands.
Houllier provided unrelenting support to the current Liverpool manager since his appointment in October 2015, and Klopp paid him an emotional tribute, leaving the impression that he will have his team poised for a proper result.
Liverpool could rise to the top of the league standings if they beat Tottenham on Wednesday night
Although Tottenham have been in good shape this season and it will be very difficult to beat
“I only have the best memories of him,” Klopp said. “ I met him several times, since I am in Liverpool we were in contact, he sent me many text messages. A very, very supportive man, a great coach and an even better human being. Very warm personality. A great surprise for his family, his friends and also for Liverpool.
‘He is a true legend of this club. What he would have loved to see, one hundred percent, was our new training ground. As you know, he was very influential in rebuilding and modernizing Melwood, and during the construction work here we were in contact and he asked me what it would be like.
He would have loved to see it. Sadly, you can’t, or at least not from here. I’m pretty sure our fans will pay tribute in the right way. ‘
