Jurgen Klopp has so far remained true to his word.
Liverpool were five days away from lifting their first title in 30 years when the agenda changed.
The transfer window had been open for a few hours and questions focused on how Klopp and his club would approach it.
With more than two months of negotiating time ahead of sports director Michael Edwards, the Reds boss made it known that the waiting game was on.
With the coronavirus pandemic continuing to affect and uncertainty surrounding the club’s finances lingering, Liverpool would be in no rush to dive headlong into the market.
Instead, Klopp asked for patience.
“As long as we don’t know exactly things, we have to wait,” Klopp insisted.
“We have a really good squad, we have seen what we can do, we have to see what we have to do, we need even more time.”
“Hopefully time will bring a little more clarity about the future and then we will make our decisions.”
Almost two months after those words, the Liverpool team is still practically the same.
The £ 11.75 million arrival of Kostas Tsimikas from Olympiacos was largely paid for by the £ 10.9 million departure of Dejan Lovren. The names remain linked, but the Reds are biding their time.
It’s different for Klopp’s Liverpool to start a new Premier League season with problems still weighing on the team, but that’s where they currently find themselves at this unique point in football history.

Calls for the signing of a fourth-choice center-back continue as daily ‘updates’ on Thiago Alcántara’s situation remain frequent.
The Reds were said to wait until after the Champions League final on August 23 to start official talks with Bayern Munich.
Almost a month later, Thiago is back in training with Bayern and Liverpool have not responded by phone to Bavarian officials.
With just under three weeks until the window closes, the Reds don’t have to move right now, but that October 5 deadline is starting to loom on the horizon.
Klopp isn’t in the habit of leaving it late at the window, but there’s a high-profile entree that broke the trend and could offer clues for the future.
The transfer window was less than 48 hours away in August 2017 when the Reds reached a deal with Arsenal for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
It was on August 30 that negotiations with the Gunners were quickly completed after the Reds agreed to match Chelsea’s £ 35 million offer.
Arsenal had told Liverpool earlier that summer that the Oxlade-Chamberlain was not for sale, but they were forced to change their minds after he rejected his contract offer worth £ 180,000 a week.
He booked a doctor in St George’s Park for the next day and completed a big money move with hours to spare on the day of the deadline over three years ago.
The deal was proof of how the landscape of a particular situation can change rapidly while offering hope for anyone who thinks a late market crash may yet come.
Jurgen Klopp has so far proven himself to be a man of his word in this window, but that waiting game may be coming to an end as we approach October 5.
