Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool will accept the “really difficult” start to their Premier League defense, and expects Chelsea to close the gap between the teams this season.
The Reds are at Stamford Bridge on Sunday after opening the top flight with a thrilling 4-3 over promoted Leeds United at Anfield last weekend.
Arsenal will then visit on Monday the week before trips to Aston Villa and Everton’s neighbors.
And when asked if Liverpool would have preferred a quieter start, Klopp was adamant.
“Can you name me the teams that would give us that kind of start?” the Reds boss replied. “I don’t see that.

“Every Premier League game is difficult for its own reasons. When you first see it, you think someone had the idea to give us Leeds, send us to Chelsea, bring in Arsenal and then go to Aston Villa before we face Everton.
“It’s difficult. But go through the Premier League and replace those teams with five other names and tell me which is easier?
“It is not possible. We have to start like this, and all these games are really difficult.
“For a second, when I looked at the match list, I thought ‘ooh, interesting.’ But that’s it. From then on we just focus on ourselves.”
Chelsea have spent over £ 200 million on the transfer market this summer and opened with a 3-1 win at Brighton and Hove Albion on Monday night.
Frank Lampard’s team finished 33 points behind Liverpool last season, but Klopp does not foresee a repeat.
“I was not expecting the difference in points that we had last season with the other teams.” he said. “So it’s 100% clear that they will close the gaps.
“It doesn’t matter what I think about it, but Chelsea’s transfers show their own ambition. They were fourth last year. They just want to get better from that.”
