Jurgen Klopp faces Roberto Firmino’s dilemma as Liverpool consider a midfield reform

[ad_1]

Liverpool did their job in the Champions League by securing first place with a game to spare after the victory over Ajax.

One goal from Curtis Jones was enough for the Reds to beat the Dutch 1-0 at Anfield on Tuesday.

The Premier League and the world champions now turn their attention to domestic matters with a home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday night.

And here we look forward to the changes Jurgen Klopp could make when his team is next in action.

With Alisson Becker paralyzed, normally Adrian would be on standby to replace.

However, Caoimhin Kelleher’s performance against Ajax was enough to suggest that the young Irishman will remain between the sticks.

With five days to prepare for the match, Joel Matip and Fabinho are expected to continue in the center-back position, especially with the next midweek match at FC Midtjylland a dead rubber. Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams are other options.

Kostas Tsimikas could replace Andy Robertson on the left-back if the Scotsman is sidelined with an ankle injury that needed treatment on Tuesday.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to return to training this week and could be in line to replace Neco Williams at right-back if deemed appropriate.

Keita’s question

Gini Wijnaldum has become such a mainstay in Liverpool’s midfield this season that Klopp felt driven to salute the Dutchman’s energy levels midweek.

Whether he is given a deserved respite will depend on three things: whether Fabinho moves to midfield, whether Naby Keita is fit or whether Liverpool switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Jordan Henderson and Curtis Jones impressed against Ajax, although the former took a hit to the back and will control his fitness.

However, Thiago Alcantara and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are unavailable with Xherdan Shaqiri and James Milner also big doubts.

Firmino in the frame

Roberto Firmino’s lively cameo from the bench will have put it online to start on Sunday.

Diogo Jota, however, will be desperate to play against his former team, while Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane remain Premier League regulars.

Liverpool have tended to use 4-2-3-1 against Wolves in recent years and that would allow all four to start.

Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi are the other attack options available to Klopp.
