Jurgen Klopp explains Liverpool went awry when Reds lost 2-0 to Blackpool

Jurgen Klopp accused his Liverpool side of lacking desire and aggression in their preseason win over Blackpool.

The Reds put seven beyond the League One team after initially being 2-0 down at Anfield.

CJ Hamilton and Jerry Yates put Blackpool two goals ahead in 33 minutes, but Klopp attributed it to preseason rust.

The German has challenged his Liverpool side to attack, rather than defend, the Premier League title.

And he’s confident they’ll be ready when they host Leeds next weekend after their mediocre half hour.

He said: “Yeah, it was because of a lack of aggression on our side, a lack of desire a bit for this game, that’s how it is, playing.

Jurgen Klopp was not impressed with Liverpool in the first exchanges of their victory

“The goals we concede, yes, they are mistakes, it’s typical of preseason games. But so far I think we concede almost all the goals in similar situations; losing the ball in preparation, then it’s a counterattack, it’s practically a free opportunity .

“We know it and it is clear that we cannot do it like that. We have to improve that. But we have another week to have fresher legs, again an intense week.”

“We have to use the weeks, we can’t change that. I would love to have always fresh guys with super fresh legs at games, but that can only work during the year when you do the hard work in the preseason.

The Reds mounted a comeback in the second half

“That’s what we’re doing. We scored a good goal after a good set piece in the first half, then everything else was more or less as it should be.” [in the second half] – much more aggressive and we could bring other fresh legs.

“That helped obviously. The opponent also changed. I think Critch has a very good team there; the first XI was really, very good, he had a good, good plan.

“We play a bit on his cards. But in the end it’s a preseason game, it’s important that we have it.”

“Some of the guys might have 90 minutes, which helps too. Now another week to Leeds, fine.”

Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Harvey Elliott and Takumi Minamino were among Liverpool’s seven scorers.
