Jurgen Klopp calls the continued criticism of Roberto Firmino “ridiculous” after the Brazilian capped the Reds’ 3-0 victory over Leicester by scoring a long-awaited goal.
Firmino found his goal for the second time this season when he headed a James Milner corner kick with just four minutes remaining at Anfield.
The Brazilian had previously been denied a goal by just 1cm after a line clearance, but his persistence paid off as he capped an excellent victory that put the Reds on points with Tottenham atop the Premier League.
Jonny Evans had broken through his own net in the first half, with Diogo Jota adding a second for Liverpool to set a new club record of 64 games at home without a loss.
Klopp was delighted after the game.
“Very (satisfying win). We deserved it, 100%,” he told Sky Sports.
“The guys played an amazing game against a superior opponent. The guys were really on fire when it came to football.”
When he pressed Firmino, he added: “What people say about him is just ridiculous, it’s just because they have nothing else to talk about. He played excellent again.”
Milner also paid tribute to Firmino by reflecting on the victory.
“The first half was very good, the second was not so good. There were many kilometers in the legs of the boys with the internationals,” said the vice-captain of the club.
“We held the ball pretty well and took the stinger off it. Bobby [Firmino] he is the most unfortunate man alive during the first 80 minutes. He deserved his goal. It was outstanding. “
On his own screen, he added: “I want to start as many games as I can, I know it won’t be every game these days.
“It’s hard to get that rhythm with all the international breaks, but it’s a long wait until the next one.
“It is impressive that we have kept it [their unbeaten home run] go without the fans. Hopefully we can continue until they can return. “
