José Mourinho’s tactic could put Liverpool to the test at Crystal Palace again

Liverpool managed to overtake Tottenham on Wednesday night after 90 minutes of finely balanced football ended in a 2-1 victory.

Throughout the clash at the top of the table, the Reds had to find the right balance between attack and defense to beat the highly tactical Spurs team of José Mourinho.

Jurgen Klopp’s men dominated the ball and were presented with a stubborn block to break through, requiring players to advance and risks being taken into possession.

However, Harry Kane and Son Heung-min lurked on the edge of their own half, waiting for a Liverpool player to make a mistake by forcing an opening that would allow for a counter attack on the opposite end.

Although the champions managed to deliver three points, the Spurs did manage to escape and generate shots on several occasions, the first of which ended up finding the back of the net shortly after Mohamed Salah scored the first goal.

Liverpool’s ability to balance attack and defense while taking risks at the right moments was largely impeccable throughout and that performance could act as an ideal preparation ahead of the weekend’s match with Crystal Palace.

The Eagles are similar to the Spurs in that they tend to absorb pressure, concede possession, and counter into space once a mistake is made.

Roy Hodgson has fast and tough players at his disposal in Wilfried Zaha, Andros Townsend, Patrick van Aanholt and Jeffrey Schlupp, to name just a few, with Eberechi Eze added in the summer.

They are more than equipped to execute much of what the Spurs did at Anfield on Wednesday, meaning the Klopp players will essentially have to go one more time before benefiting from a week without a game.

The Reds will once again have to prove their credentials as the best in the division when it comes to breaking through a defensive blockage while also handling emerging counterattacks, which is easier said than done.

If Liverpool can strike that balance once again, they will almost certainly sit at the top of the table on Christmas Day for the second year in a row as Klopp looks to retain his Premier League crown.
