José Mourinho is trying his oldest trick with Liverpool, but his threat in the Premier League is real

Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur.

Jürgen Klopp vs José Mourinho.

It will certainly be interesting to see the top two in the Premier League meet for the first time this season. Liverpool have a long history with Mourinho, and that has continued this week.

Everyone knows his game plan these days, it’s no secret that he will do everything he can to get under his opponent’s skin and ruffle some feathers. With his last press conference, he tried to do just that.

“I think Alisson is not injured. Alexander-Arnold is not injured. Matip, I think he will play. Fabinho is not injured. Robertson is not injured. Henderson is not injured. Wijnaldum is not injured. Salah is not injured, Firmino is not. is injured, Mane is not injured.

“Van Dijk is injured and Van Dijk is a very good player, of course. But give me Liverpool’s injury list and compare it to the best team in Liverpool.”

We got the message loud and clear, but everyone associated with Liverpool would do well not to listen. There was a time when Mourinho’s words carried incredible weight, and everyone across the country was on the edge of their seats as they absorbed what he had to say.

Those days are gone. Yes, he still deserves to be in the picture as the best coach in world football, but there is no longer the same fear of what he and his team could do.

If you compare where he is now to his peak years in Chelsea, they are miles apart. However, in defense of that, each respective club had different transfer budgets and Mourinho has only been with Spurs for just over 12 months.

It all comes down to whether Liverpool allow Mourinho’s comments to affect them in any way. If they are wise, Klopp will make sure they are ignored and will focus solely on getting all three points tonight. If the opposite happens, then you can be sure that Mourinho will use it to his advantage.

Tonight’s game could have significant ramifications for the fate of the Premier League title. A Liverpool win would see them restored as leaders and on track to retain the trophy, while a loss would certainly mean Spurs should be considered true title contenders.

Mourinho’s recent comments are nothing new, in fact it would have been a surprise if he hadn’t tried to irritate Liverpool in some way. Klopp will know what his counterpart is doing, he himself has enough experience to know that he should not engage in verbal exchanges that do not relate to the actual football being played. It is what Mourinho does when he knows that the team he faces is better than his, so it should be taken as a compliment at least.

Liverpool have to show they have the quality on the pitch to win important trophies, but now they have to be able to ignore the noise outside and focus exclusively on getting the job done at Anfield tonight.

What I read on Liverpool.com

Joel has written an interesting article on Spurs forward Harry Kane and how Liverpool must be at their best to stop his quality.

There’s also a good read here from David Lynch, looking at how Klopp may be under pressure after a transfer decision, but it could lead to a player thriving on the added responsibility.

What i am seeing

Liverpool have released a brilliant video with Alisson Becker and Roberto Firmino participating in a contest. Definitely one to put a smile on your face.
