JOHOR BARU: The police have stopped a major prostitution ring with the arrest of 13 key union members along with 31 prostitutes in a series of raids on cheap hotels in the city.
Johor Police Chief Comm Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay (Photo) said on Thursday (September 3) that the prostitution ring, which operated out of at least five cheap hotels, had been using social media to get clients.
“They operated daily, 24 hours a day, and charged between RM 190-650 for their services,” he said, adding that the union had been operating since 2018.
He said the arrests began on August 27 when a team of officers from Bukit Aman and Johor arrested eight members of the local union and detained 12 women, including nine Indonesians and three Vietnamese in a series of raids here.
“Later, on September 2, we raided some more hotels and arrested five union members, including a woman, and detained 19 women, including 18 Vietnamese and one Thai,” he said during a press conference.
All suspects, aged 19 to 63, have been sent for investigation.
Police also confiscated items such as condoms, mobile phones, cash, massage oils and lubricants in the raids.
Comm Ayob said police were now in contact with their counterparts in other states and Singapore to determine if the union had ties outside of Johor.
