JOHOR BARU (THE STAR / ASIA NEWS NETWORK) – The Johor Baru district has been declared a red zone after the number of Covid-19 cases surpassed 40 in a span of 14 days.

Johor Health and Environment Committee Chairman R. Vidyananthan said monitoring and surveillance efforts would be boosted due to an expected increase in the number of cases in the near future.

“Johor Baru district was declared a red zone on Thursday (October 29). According to the information, most of the reported cases involved the spread of the disease between family members and workplaces.

“Because of this, the state health department has placed the institutions involved under a home surveillance order.

“Ten new Covid-19 cases were reported on Thursday, including nine cases from existing clusters and one from other examinations,” it said in a statement Friday.

Mr. Vidyananthan pointed out that there are currently three groups active in Johor, namely the Bayu, Kempas and Rinting groups.

“The cumulative number of positive cases for the Bayu group stands at eight as of Thursday, involving three co-workers and five of their relatives,” he said, adding that 104 close contacts of the group have been identified.

He added that the Kempas cluster has registered about 42 cases, involving eight co-workers, 17 of their relatives, 11 colleagues of their relatives, five students and one of their relatives.

Meanwhile, the Rinting group recorded 10 cases involving two colleagues, six of their relatives and two friends of their children.

Separately, an elementary school in Johor Baru has been told to close for a week after one of its students tested positive for Covid-19.

A notice on the matter was sent out Thursday to students, parents and teachers.

“Since the beginning of March, the school has taken the necessary precautions to prevent Covid-19 and will continue to do so.

“Unfortunately, on Thursday, the Ministry of Health confirmed the spread of the disease in the school,” the notice says.

It added that the Johor Department of Education had ordered the school to close for seven days, from Friday (October 30) to Thursday (November 5) as a safety measure.

It was learned that a 4th grade primary student tested positive for Covid-19 and was sent to hospital for treatment and isolation.

When contacted, the chairman of the state education, information, heritage and culture committee Mazlan Bujang confirmed the closure of the school.
