JOHOR BARU: The Johor government has allowed Friday and Hari Raya Aidilfitri prayers, as well as akad nikah (solemnization of marriage) ceremony throughout the state during the conditional motion control order period.

The chairman of the state committee on Islamic religious affairs, Tosrin Jarvanthi, said that ruler Johor Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar has issued a decree to allow the matter to take place across the state.

Assemblyman from Bukit Permai said Friday prayers can be held in mosques starting May 15.

However, there will be guidelines for celebrating such prayers in mosques, such as that the congregation should not be made up of more than 12 people at a time.

“This includes the imam, the bilal and the committee of the respective mosque where they will take turns performing the prayers,” he said at a press conference in Pusat Islam Iskandar here on Wednesday (May 13).

Tosrin reminded all mosques to follow the new standard operating procedures introduced by the Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ) and the Ministry of Health under the conditional MCO.

He noted that any mosque found that does not meet the set of guidelines would take action against the closure.

“We will ask the police and Rela to keep an eye on all the mosques to make sure that the number of people praying does not exceed 12 people during Friday prayers and Hari Raya Aidilfitri.”

“For other Muslims, they can still perform the prayers in their own home,” he added.

At the akad nikah ceremony, Tosrin said the ceremony should take place in the respective Kadi office, where it should not exceed six people, including the couple, wali and witnesses.

“However, wedding receptions still cannot be held as it involves a massive gathering of the public, which goes against the conditional MCO,” he said.

He added that a total of 872 couples were expected to perform their akad nikah ceremony in Johor during the conditional MCO starting May 17.

“This is the number of approved applications issued by the respective Kadi district offices before the first MCO was imposed on March 18,” he said.
