CITY OF GEORGE: Financial problems due to financial hardship caused by the Covid-19 pandemic may have led to the death of a horseman and a street vendor today.
The 35-year-old rider died from his unit in the Rifle Range on the Air Itam floors here, while the 50-year-old peddler fell to his death from the Penang Bridge around 9 a.m. on Sunday.
The rider on the circuit at the Penang Turf Club left a wife and two children.
Apparently he has not worked since the movement control order (MCO) was imposed on March 18, northeast district police chief Asst Comm Soffian Santong said today.
A spokesman for the state fire and rescue department confirmed the incident and said firefighters were trying to locate the man, who is feared drowned.
Professor of criminology at Sains University in Malaysia, Dr. Datuk P. Sundramoorthy, said that with bleak economic conditions, the depression rate will increase and could lead to suicidal tendencies.
He urged the authorities to carry out a comprehensive study since the introduction of MCO is relatively new in the country and the world.
Stress levels could increase due to medical and financial concerns, as both are important elements in life, Sundramoorthy said.
