KOTA BHARU: A “gold rush” of customers crowding jewelry stores, following a drop in gold prices, has led to fines for customers and store owners for not complying with Covid-19 protocols.

Kelantan police said 23 composite notices have been issued since yesterday.

State Police Chief Shafien Mamat said 35 gold shops around Kota Bharu were being monitored to ensure owners and customers abide by the rules on physical distancing and wearing face masks.

“The facility owners also did not provide other temperature scanners and hand sanitizers because they may have been too busy serving their customers,” he told reporters.

Police urged the community to adhere to the rules to break the chain of Covid-19 infections.

“So far we have instructed (store owners and customers) to comply. However, if they are still stubborn, the police will work with local authorities to take steps to close the facility, ”he said.

He urged merchants to hire Rela volunteers for crowd control.
