Popular Japanese actress Yuko Takeuchi died at the age of 40.
According to Japanese news reports, her family found her unconscious at her Tokyo residence in the early hours of Sunday (September 27) and her death was confirmed at the hospital. The police suspect that suicide is the cause of death.
This is eight months after Takeuchi gave birth to her son with Japanese actor Taiki Nakabayashi, whom she married in 2019. Takeuchi has another 14-year-old son with kabuki and film actor Shido Nakamura II. He divorced Nakamura in 2008.
Takeuchi is well known in Japan and throughout the region. She got her big break with the morning drama series Asuka (1999) and went on to star in successful series such as the ice hockey romance. Pride (2004), together with Takuya Kimura. She also starred Miss sherlock (2018), an adaptation by HBO Asia and Hulu Japan of the classic Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. He had received critical acclaim for his various film roles, including Yomigaeri (2003), for which she was nominated for a Japan Academy Film Award, the country’s most prestigious acting award.
Most recently, Takeuchi had been on hiatus from acting due to her pregnancy, but appeared at an event promoting an instant noodle brand earlier this month. She then said in an Instagram post, “How is everyone doing during summer break? I cut my bangs for the new school year.”

There have been a number of suicides in the Japanese entertainment industry in recent months. Actor Haruma Miura was found dead at his home in July, at age 30, while he was a professional wrestler and reality series. Terrace of the house Star Hana Kimura died in May at age 22. Actress Sei Ashina, 36, and actor Takashi Fujiki, 80, were found dead this month in suspected suicides. – The Straits Times / Asia News Network
