TOKYO (Bernama): Japan on Tuesday (May 12) raised its travel alert for 13 countries to its second highest level, warning of any travel to these areas as new coronavirus infections continue to spread globally,

Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said at a press conference that foreign travelers who have been to the 13 nations, which include five countries in South and Central America, including Mexico, Uruguay and Colombia, within the two weeks after arrival in Japan they will be denied entry after the updated Advice.

The entry ban will be finalized shortly after talks at the National Security Council and a meeting of the government working group on the virus outbreak, Japan’s Kyodo News reported.

With Tuesday’s move, the number of countries and regions with a level 3 advisory totals 100, according to Motegi.

The Level 3 advisory is one step below the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ highest level of travel alert, which urges Japanese citizens to “immediately evacuate” from a country or area and “avoid all travel regardless of purpose. “

“The regions where the infection is spreading are changing over time,” said Motegi.

According to the report, other new countries added to the list of Tier 3 advisory areas include the Maldives, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and five African countries.

Japan has banned foreign travelers from 87 countries and regions, including China, South Korea, the United States, Russia and most of Europe since March, and suspended visas issued to people from the rest of the world.

All other countries follow in the Tier 2 notice, in which Japanese citizens are asked to refrain from non-essential foreign travel. – Bernama
