Jamie Redknapp has told Sky Sports that he believes Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk is now worth £ 225 million.
Van Dijk joined Liverpool for £ 75 million in 2018, and at the time some observers questioned the fee.
However, Van Dijk has become one of the best defenders in world football.
And Redknapp says his value has tripled during his time at Anfield, as his form has been so impressive.
“Liverpool have worked very well in the market, they have not always bought the big stars, they have turned them into stars,” he said.
“Virgil may be the opposite, they paid £ 75 million for him, but what his fees would be now, maybe three times more because he’s an amazing player.”
Liverpool, of course, will have no intention of selling Van Dijk anytime soon, but Redknapp’s comments show how highly regarded he has become.
Van Dijk, who was described as ‘world class’ by BBC expert Pat Nevin, is currently a major loss to Liverpool as he will not play again this season.
The Reds are suffering a lot from injuries, especially since Joe Gomez has now also suffered a serious knee problem.
Liverpool may now have to choose between Nathaniel Phillips, Rhys Williams and Joel Matip for the remainder of the season, making their task of defending their Premier League crown even more difficult.
