KUALA LUMPUR: Axiata Group Bhd Chairman and Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jamaludin Ibrahim will retire as Chairman of Celcom Axiata Bhd on October 15.

The presidency will be assumed by Izzaddin Idris, who is currently Axiata’s CEO, the group’s deputy CEO and the group’s designated CEO, as well as a director of the Celcom Axiata board.

In a statement today, Axiata said that Jamaludin would continue his role as president and CEO of the Axiata group until the end of December 2020.

“This is a decisive step forward and part of a larger plan toward a smooth and trouble-free leadership succession at Axiata.

“And the Celcom Axiata and Axiata boards accept this news with great regret and also with gratitude for Jamaludin’s 12 years of dedicated service to the company,” he said.

According to Axiata, Jamaludin has held the position of Chairman of Celcom since the separation of Celcom and Telekom Malaysia International from Telekom Malaysia Bhd in 2008.

Jamaludin said it was time he handed over the reins to Izzaddin, having led the Celcom Axiata board for more than 12 years.

“This is part of the overall transition plan announced earlier this year, where Izzaddin will assume all my responsibilities in a planned step-by-step process to ensure a smooth succession,” he said.

Izzaddin has already overseen several key corporate functions and has assumed leadership positions at some key subsidiaries, including Celcom Axiata.

“Under his capable and experienced leadership but with a new direction, Izzaddin, along with Celcom Axiata’s board and CEO Idham Nawawi, Celcom Axiata will definitely chart new growth and success,” said Jamaludin.

In the meantime, Izzaddin said he was grateful for the trust that the Axiata and Celcom Axiata boards of directors have given him, adding that the past nine months had been an exceptional familiarization experience for him.

“Together with the management of Celcom Axiata under Idham’s leadership, I look forward to carrying out its transformation agenda that covers the operational, financial and strategic aspects of the business,” he said.

On January 23, Axiata said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia that Jamaludin had informed the board of his decision to retire after having worked in the telecommunications and information and communications technology industry for 39 years.

In the same filing, the telecommunications company said that Jamaludin’s contract, which expired on March 2, 2020, would run through the end of 2020.
