Former Minister Yeo Bee Yin is seeking RM5 million in compensation from Jamal Yunos for a defamatory statement he made.

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeals set April 22 of next year to hear Jamal Md Yunos’ appeal against the Supreme Court’s dismissal of his request to resolve a defamation lawsuit filed against him by the former minister of energy, science, technology, environment and climate change Yeo. Bee Yin.

The appeal came up for case management through electronic review procedure before Deputy Registrar Nor Azah Idris today. Jamal’s attorney, Mohammed Nasser Yusof, attended with attorney Kenny Lee representing Yeo.

Yeo’s attorneys, Sankara N Nair and Mohammed Nasser, when contacted, confirmed the date of the appeal hearing.

On August 7, the Kuala Lumpur High Court dismissed Jamal’s request for the lawsuit to be vacated and ordered him to pay RM2,000 in costs.

Sungai Division Chief Besar Umno filed the request to settle the lawsuit in June on the grounds that it was premature as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s investigations were still ongoing.

Yeo filed the lawsuit on June 14, 2017, seeking RM5 million in compensation from Jamal for his defamatory statement regarding the alleged abuse of Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor (Yawas) funds.

In the claim statement, Yeo, who is also a Bakri deputy, claimed that Jamal had issued a defamatory statement on March 21, 2017 and that the statement was also published by various newspapers, news portals, and on the Facebook account of Jamal.

Yeo claimed that Jamal’s statement, among others, gave the impression that she had abused public funds for personal use and described her as unethical and unreliable.

In addition to RM5 million in general damages, Yeo is also seeking exemplary, aggravated and compensatory damages and a court order to prevent Jamal from repeating the allegations.
