KUALA LUMPUR: Saifuddin Abdullah has defended the renowned Department of Community Communication (J-KOM), saying that a worldview approach based on realistic and mature thinking is needed to assess its role.
The communications and multimedia minister said that all sectors should develop a new thinking about two-way communication between the government and the people, especially at the grassroots level, in view of the new challenges and needs.
“The fact is that J-KOM is not Jasa (Department of Special Affairs),” he said closing the debate on the 2021 Supply Bill in Dewan Negara today.
Saifuddin said that J-KOM’s main task was to implement the communication strategy for the new normal.
In this regard, he said that the role of J-KOM would not overlap with those of advertising agencies of other ministries in terms of target groups, program focus and activities.
“J-KOM will also take into consideration the space to save under this allocation in the 2021 Budget. This is because under the J-KOM structure, it is located in districts throughout the country compared to Jasa, which was previously present. in all parliamentary and state assembly constituencies, ”he said.
Regarding Internet and broadband service, Saifuddin said that the allocation of RM500 million for the National Digital Network Plan was for the provision of fiber optic-based broadband coverage.
He said that the use of very small aperture terminal technology was not within the scope of this project.
“The technology used is a fiber optic infrastructure that can provide high-speed fixed broadband delivery at a minimum of 100 Mbps to 1 GB, according to customer demands,” he added.
Saifuddin also said that his ministry always disseminated information about government aid for the people through the television and radio platforms, namely RTM, Information Department and Bernama, as well as the media channels.
