PETALING JAYA: Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) has denied that its wastewater treatment plant in Rawang has discharged effluent in Sungai Gong, causing the river to go dark on Saturday (September 19).
IWK CEO Narendran Maniam (Photo) said this in response to a statement by the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) that a sparkling and colored effluent from an IWK plant was detected in the river.
“This (Luas) statement will confuse people and at the same time point the guilty finger at IWK when the real cause is likely due to illegal dumping of waste,” Narendran said in a statement on Sunday (September 20). .
IWK suspected that illegal waste disposal occurred near its plant, causing material to flow into the plant, it added.
It said an IWK staff at its Rawang Integrated Industrial Park wastewater treatment plant had identified a yellow, non-sewage waste discharged into the plant’s inlet chamber, causing the effluent in the final process to become contaminated. with an intense yellow color.
Narendran added that IWK staff stopped the effluent discharge because of this, adding that the cleanup process will be completed on Sunday.
The plant in question is an oxidation ditch plant that is connected to 11,106 inhabitants, covering only the industrial area.
“Wastewater treatment plants are only designed to treat wastewater and are not capable of treating chemicals or other wastes illegally dumped into the sewer pipe,” he said.
Narendran said IWK also expressed frustration at having become “an easy target” for any water contamination incident without fact checking first.
“IWK always ensures that the operation and maintenance works in the 7,000 plants under the supervision of IWK are always in accordance with the specifications and procedures established by the authorities.
“Non-sewer waste is often dumped into sewer chambers by irresponsible parties. Therefore, it is better for all parties to work together to address the actual pollution problem, ”Narendran added.
Disposal of non-sewage waste is a crime under the 2006 Water Services Industry Act, he added.
