PETALING JAYA: It is time for the leaders of all political parties to come together to form a unity, inclusive and sustainable government for the coming years, said several public figures.

They said this is necessary to save lives, livelihoods and the economy, as the political, socio-economic and pandemic-related crisis facing the country is unprecedented.

“A unity government will have to work on a set of national programs that can benefit the people and give priority to the reactivation of the economy, whose downward trajectory is now certain if the nation’s politicians continue divided and engaged in infighting.” .

“The first step may be a national financial and budget advisory council to be established to achieve a national consensus on the 2021 national budget that can be presented and approved at the Dewan Rakyat.”

“In this sense, the presentation of the 2021 budget scheduled for November 6 could be postponed for a month or more,” they said in a joint statement.

The statement was sung by Tan Sri Michael Yeoh, Tian Chua, Datuk Halimah Mohd Said, Datuk Dr. Denison Jayasooria, Dr. Lim Teck Ghee, Datuk Johan Ariffin, and Professor Dr. Tajudin Rasdi.

They said the next step should be for government and opposition leaders to work to establish a Unity Government and formulate a National Action Plan.

The group said the focus of unity government should be on inclusion, good governance and mobilizing the best talent in the nation to save lives and the economy, as well as to maintain peace and harmony during this period of national crisis. .

“Declaring an emergency or going ahead with early general elections that have been raised in some sectors is not only an inappropriate, dangerous and misguided response.”

“It will put the future of the nation at great risk,” they said.

They said that a unity government that brings together government and opposition leaders provides the best opportunity to overcome the current crisis and restart the national policy towards reconciliation, security and reform.
