PETALING JAYA: The opposition leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, only presented the number, but not the names of the MPs who, according to him, supported him as the next prime minister, said the Comptroller of the Royal House of Istana Negara Datuk Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin.
“Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah had an audience with the opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Istana Negara at 11 on the morning of October 13, “Ahmad Fadil said in a statement yesterday.
“This meeting was initially scheduled for September 22, but was postponed due to Al-Sultan Abdullah’s illness during which he was treated at the National Heart Institute between September 21 and October 3.
“During the 25 minute hearing, Anwar presented the total number of Dewan Rakyat members who he claimed support him.
However, he did not submit the names to support his claim.
“Therefore, Al-Sultan Abdullah had advised Anwar to follow and respect the legal process as set out in the Federal Constitution,” Ahmad Fadil said, adding that the King was also concerned about the Covid-19 situation in the country.
“On the current development of the Covid-19 pandemic, especially with the conditional motion control order in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, Yang di-Pertuan Agong expresses concern and advises people to remain calm and be disciplined when take care of your health by following the new rules and standard operating procedures, ”said Ahmad Fadil.
Early yesterday Anwar had an audience with the King, during which he claimed that he had informed him that he had a “formidable majority” in Dewan Rakyat to support his candidacy to be the next prime minister.
The statement added that Sultan Abdullah had also consented to a partial closure of the palace effective today to protect the health of palace staff in accordance with the conditional MCO.
Although the current development is worrying, with daily new cases of Covid-19 increasing by triple digits with the emergence of new groups since October 1, Al-Sultan Abdullah expressed confidence that the rakyat, regardless of race, religion and political ideology, will remain united in the fight against Covid-19, ”the statement said.
In an interesting twist, Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah was also seen leaving Istana Negara yesterday afternoon.
The media staff who had been on standby since morning did not realize that he had entered the palace grounds and were surprised to see him leave at around 2.43pm.
However, he did not stop to address the press.
A police officer approached the media shortly after and ordered them to disperse. When asked, he said that no one else would be coming to meet the King for the rest of the day.
Earlier on September 22, Tengku Razaleigh said that MPs were not allowed to pledge their respective support through the SDs, as the incumbent government would be decided on the Dewan Rakyat through votes from MPs.
