PUTRAJAYA: The government has announced further relaxation of Covid-19 Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in the sports and tourism sector.

The sports sector includes resuming the Malaysian Cup and allowing the country to host world-class sporting events.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob (Photo) said the Malaysia Cup tournament, which was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, may resume in January.

For states under Recovery Motion Control (MCO) order, a maximum of 4,000 spectators or 10% of seating capacity will be allowed.

For states under the conditional MCO, games will be played without spectators, while games are prohibited for places under enhanced OLS.

On the organization of sports games of international level, Ismail Sabri said that the approval of the Department of Immigration is required.

“Athletes from high-risk countries cannot participate in these games unless they get approval from the Department of Immigration.

“National athletes who wish to participate in tournaments abroad, especially in high-risk countries, must also obtain immigration approval,” Ismail Sabri said at a press conference on Friday (December 18).

For contact sports, participants must first undergo smear tests and be declared negative for Covid-19 before they can participate in the games.

Meanwhile, Ismail Sabri said that meeting events, incentive trips, conferences and exhibitions (MICE), tourist attractions such as zoos and recreational parks, museums and theme parks can reopen from December 19.

However, the number of attendees is limited to 50% of the space of the premises, applying physical distancing.

He added that detailed SOPs can be found on the websites of the Ministry of Tourism, Art and Culture; Ministry of Youth and Sports; and the National Security Council.
