PETALING JAYA: Some 522 people were arrested for violating the recovery movement control order (MCO) in various ways, including attending nightclub and pub activities, violating social distancing, and not wearing masks in crowded places.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that of those arrested, 342 people became aggravated while 180 were detained after police monitoring and enforcement activities on Saturday (September 19).
Ismail Sabri said that 363 of the 522 captured were bar and nightclub goers, while 81 were detained for not obeying physical distancing.
“Some 36 people were arrested for not wearing their masks in crowded places; 17 for trespassing; 12 merchants who did not provide their clients with registration facilities; seven foreigners without valid travel documents; five for operating beyond the allowed hours and one for go outside of the improved MCO areas, “Ismail Sabri said in a statement on Sunday (September 20).
It said there were 2,617 police-led monitoring teams to verify compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs).
The teams conducted a total of 52,947 checks in supermarkets, restaurants, merchants, factories, banks and government offices to ensure that all standard operating procedures are followed.
Ismail Sabri also said that 180 illegal immigrants along with five human smugglers and a Tekong were arrested under Ops Benteng on Saturday.
Five vehicles were also seized during the operations.
“The government will crack down on parties trying to enter the country illegally and enforcement agencies will continue to tighten border controls, especially on rat streets (lorong-lorong tikus),” he said.
On the mandatory quarantine imposed since July 24, Ismail Sabri said that to date, 31,227 people had to undergo quarantine in 68 hotels and eight designated centers.
As of Saturday, Ismail Sabri said that 22,483 people who returned from 32 countries were allowed to return to their homes after completing the quarantine process.
The minister also said that since March 30, the Ministry of Housing and Local Government has supervised 10,016 sanitation exercises in 135 zones.
To date, 13,023 premises have been cleaned up, including business centers, government buildings, residential areas, public places and supermarkets.
