Islanders celebrate as Singapore confirms 447 new Covid-19 cases, smallest surge in two weeks

SINGAPORE: Singapore’s Ministry of Health confirmed 447 new coronavirus infections on Saturday (May 2), the smallest daily increase in two weeks, bringing the city-state’s case count to 17,548 with 16 virus-related deaths .

Most of the new cases are among migrant workers living in dormitories, the ministry said.

This brings the total number of cases here to 17,548.

The vast majority of new cases are holders of work permits in residences of foreign workers.

There were four Singaporeans and permanent residents among the new cases.

It is the ninth day in a row that new daily infections fell below 1,000.

Earlier on Saturday, the multi-ministry task force spearheading Singapore’s response to the Covid-19 outbreak announced that stringent switch measures will remain in effect for another week.

Companies such as barbers, home bakers and laundry services will be able to resume operations on May 12, while some measures will also be adjusted next week. – The Straits Times / Asian News Network
