KUALA LUMPUR: Former Felda President Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad ( Photo) has been sentenced to six years in prison and fined 15.4 million ringgit by the High Court.
This comes after the High Court found him guilty of nine corruption charges involving more than RM3 thousand related to the purchase of a hotel in Sarawak.
Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali convicted Mohd Isa on the charges here on Wednesday (February 3).
In his decision, Judge Nazlan said that Isa’s defense had not raised any doubts in the prosecution’s case against him.
The hearing in the case began on October 8, 2019, and the prosecution called 22 witnesses, including former Felda CEO Datuk Hanapi Suhada, to testify.
Mohd Isa was charged with nine counts of dishonestly receiving gratuity for himself, in cash totaling RM3,090,000 from Ikhwan, who is a board member of Gegasan Abadi Properties Sdn Bhd, through one Muhammad Zahid Md Arip, as a bonus for helping to approve the purchase. from Merdeka Palace Hotel & Suites (MPHS) by FIC for RM160mil.
All of the crimes were allegedly committed at Level 49, Menara Felda, Platinum Park, No. 11, Persiaran KLCC near here between July 21, 2014 and December 11, 2015.
All the charges were framed under Section 16a (A) of the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, punishable under Section 24 (1) of the same act, which provides for a penalty imprisonment not to exceed 20 years and a fine of at least five times the amount of the bribe, RM10,000 or whichever is greater at the time of conviction.
