IPOH: One of the oldest hotels in Ipoh, Syeun Hotel, is the last to permanently close its doors due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

A staff reduction notice dated Thursday (April 30) that was sent to its staff stating that the hotel will close at the end of May 31 has been widely distributed on social media.

The letter, signed by its director Loh Sow Chee, said the company has suffered for the past three years, even before the motion control order (MCO) was enforced.

He said that since then, management has been unable to do business and that the MCO has expanded further, it may take longer for them to do so.

“Even after the MCO is lifted, it would be highly unlikely that the tourism industry will recover in the very near future.

“A sharp decline in demand for hotel accommodation and our other facilities caused sales turnover to drop to a significantly low level where we could not afford to stretch our financial capabilities,” the letter said.

The administration said that steps will be taken to pay its staff salary until May 31, inclusive of other applicable compensation.

In addition, the company will also pay its employees downsizing benefits in accordance with the Employment Act of 1955 – Employment (Termination and Dismissal) Regulations of 1980.

Syeun Hotel was officially opened on October 24, 1993.

When asked, the hotel’s business development manager, Nooris Waty Ismail, confirmed the closure.

“The hotel will be permanently closed. Our last day will be May 31, ”he said, adding that the hotel has 155 employees.
