IPOH: The Ipoh City Council is not only aiming for Ipoh to become the cleanest city in the country by 2023, but it also hopes to rank first in Southeast Asia.
Mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin said the first goal was for Ipoh to gain recognition as the cleanest city in the country.
However, he said they were not just dwelling on that, but to ensure that once that status is achieved, Ipoh will be the cleanest city in Southeast Asia.
“Right now, the city of Singapore is the cleanest city in Southeast Asia, so we must start educating our people to adopt cleanliness as part of their daily regimen.
“Efficient machinery, as well as a disciplined attitude among the people, must work hand in hand to ensure that we achieve our goals,” he told reporters after launching a waste management collection operation for the Meru and Manjoi areas here. .
Rumaizi added that once Ipoh is recognized as the cleanest city in Southeast Asia, its goal is to be on par, if not cleaner, than Tokyo.
“The council must start thinking big if we are to achieve our goals.
“In Singapore, their tactic is to focus on law enforcement, while in Japan, it is education from the young that instills discipline in its citizens.
“So for our culture, we have to study to see which model is best suited,” he added.
To begin with, Rumaizi said that the state government has appointed Majuperak Utilities Management Sdn Bhd to handle solid waste management in the state.
He said that under the jurisdiction of the council, to begin with, the Meru and Manjoi areas would be involved as the two areas are under the pilot project.
“We will soon expand to other areas,” he added.
