JOHOR BARU: A major British international school located in Iskandar Puteri is at risk of closing after eight years due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, says Datuk Hasni Mohammad (Photo).
Johor Mentri Besar said the school’s students, numbering between 800 and 900, are unable to commute between their school and Singapore due to the border closure.
“I received a letter from the school asking for help from the state government to find a way to allow their students to commute to attend classes.
“In the letter, the school also described the challenges they are going through, where they face the possibility of having to close, as they cannot operate as usual,” he added.
Hasni said this in his speech at the Johor Media Club Annual General Assembly Meeting, held at a hotel here on Thursday night (September 17).
He said it would be a great loss to Johor if a world-class educational institution were to cease operations.
According to Mentri Besar, the state will discuss the matter with Putrajaya soon.
He said he will meet with Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and urge the federal government to speed up discussions on reopening the border with Singapore for commuters.
On another matter, Hasni said that Wisma Putra would soon present a Cabinet document on opening a Johor government office in the island republic that focuses on economy, commerce and culture.
“We believe that with our presence in Singapore, we could explore further collaboration between them and us.
“Our interest with Singapore is not only limited to trade issues, but also to other areas such as water resources and water borders.
“These are issues that require good relations between Singapore and Johor,” he said.
