KOTA KINABALU: An Indonesian narcotics offender who passed out after being sentenced by a judge, was later confirmed dead due to a heart attack.
The late 42-year-old Hadirun Lagili, who had been detained at the Penampang District Police Station, was taken to the Kota Kinabalu Judicial Complex to hear his sentence.
However, he suddenly fainted right after the judge handed down the sentence, surprising judicial personnel present, during the incident at 11 a.m. on Tuesday (December 8).
The undocumented suspect originally from Buton, Indonesia, was charged under Section 15 (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 (administration or use of dangerous drugs).
He was jailed for six months and would be deported after serving his sentence.
Kota Kinabalu OCPD Acting Superintendent George Abd Rakman confirmed the incident but did not elaborate on the crime or the case.
Superintendent George said they were alerted by the police on duty in court and an ambulance was called immediately.
The man was taken to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital for further treatment, but was pronounced dead at 12:06 p.m.
“The cause of death is believed to have been a heart attack.
“The case is classified as sudden death,” he added.
