Indonesian influencer Raffi Ahmad is facing a huge backlash after images and videos of him partying, a few hours after receiving a priority vaccination against Covid-19, went viral on social media.
Raffi was seen partying with his wife Nagita Slavina in an Instagram story photo aware by influencer Anya Geraldine, according to a report by CNN Indonesia.
Anya in her post criticized Raffi’s actions, noting that she apparently stopped practicing health measures after getting vaccinated.
The report also indicated that Raffi and the other party guests seen in other posts had not adhered to some Covid-19 safety guidelines, such as wearing masks and maintaining physical distance. Police told CNN Indonesia that Raffi and others will be called in for an investigation, including the organizer of the event he attended.
Social media users who shared Anya’s post were also quick to criticize Raffi for not setting a good example for his followers as he had been selected to receive priority Covid-19 vaccination due to his large following. They mostly voiced disappointment by his actions while a Twitter user urged him to “do better.”
Raffi has 49.4 million followers on his Instagram account and 19 million subscribers on YouTube. Both accounts show him making content with Nagita, who is an actress and television host.
On January 13, Raffi and other influential people were among the first in Indonesia to be vaccinated along with President Joko Widodo and nearly 1.5 million healthcare workers. Indonesia has recorded more than 869,000 Covid-19 cases and 25,000 deaths.
Siti Nadia Tarmizi, a senior health ministry official, told Reuters it was part of a “deliberate government communications strategy.”
The 33-year-old influencer, who is also an actor and singer, posted an apology video on Instagram on January 14. He claimed that the event took place on private property with established security protocols and that he removed his mask to eat. .
He also reminded viewers to practice Covid-19 prevention measures and expressed his gratitude for being selected to receive a priority vaccine. The video has received more than six million views.
The Indonesian Ministry of Health has expressed regret for Raffi’s actions in a Jan. 15 report by CNN Indonesia, in which a spokesperson urged Raffi to continue to observe health and safety protocols even though he had already received the vaccine.
