India Sets World’s Highest Single-Day Rise With 78,761 New Virus Cases

NEW DELHI, Aug. 30 (AFP): India set a new virus record on Sunday when it reported 78,761 new infections in 24 hours, according to Health Ministry figures, surpassing the United States with the highest increase in a day in the world. .

India, home to 1.3 billion people, is already the third most infected country in the world with more than 3.5 million cases, behind the United States and Brazil.

The United States set the previous record on July 17 with 77,638 daily cases, according to an AFP tally.

Xinhua reported that there are still 765,302 active cases in India, while 2,713,933 people have been cured and successfully discharged from hospitals.

According to the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), a total of 41,461,636 had been tested as of Saturday, while 1,055,027 tests had been performed on Saturday alone.

This was the second time in India that more than 1 million samples were analyzed in a single day, as the country focuses on increasing sample testing.

India will enter Unlock 4 starting Tuesday (September 1) and new guidelines were issued on Saturday to follow during Unlock 4.

According to the new guidelines, schools will remain closed until September, although 9-12 students have been allowed to approach their teachers in schools for guidance.

Metro Rail services could begin on September 7 in a staggered manner, and public functions or other congregations would be allowed with a maximum limit of 100 people starting on September 21.
