KAJANG: A 33-year-old independent event organizer who beat up a firefighter in a video that went viral was sentenced to six months in jail and fined RM6,000 by two magistrates’ courts here for last week’s incident.
Kan Hong Kit was sentenced to one month in jail from the date of sentencing by Judge Muhammad Noor Firdaus Rosli, who accepted the defendant’s guilty plea here on Tuesday (October 20).
According to the charge sheet, Kan had used criminal intimidation to prevent official Alfred Rudy Anak Tungku from fulfilling his duty as a firefighter in Jalan Suakasih, Bandar Tun Hussein Onn, Batu 9, Cheras, at 10:40 am on October 15.
He was charged under article 353 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison or a fine or both.
Earlier, Kan’s lawyer, Nik Azhar Nik Adib, said that his client apologized for his mistake.
“Promise not to repeat it. This is his first offense and he has been in pre-trial detention since the day of his arrest, ”said Nik Azhar.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prosecutor Muhammad Hairuliqram Hairuddin lobbied for a harsh sentence to be imposed.
He said the crime took place during the conditional motion control order (MCO) where members of the public should be offering their cooperation to authorities.
“Firefighters were trying to put out a fire in a defendant’s own car to avoid a major explosion in a public place.
“He shouldn’t have hurt the firefighter. I should not have belittled the duty of public officials, especially front-line ones who are working hard to break the chain of Covid-19, ”DPP Hairuliqram said.
In another court, Kan was sentenced to five months in prison and a fine of 6,000 ringgit failing three months in prison for reckless driving.
Magistrate Syahrul Sazly Md Sain also ordered the suspension of Kan’s driver’s license for two years.
Kan pleaded guilty to recklessly driving a car and endangering the public in Jalan Suadamai, Bandar Tun Hussein Onn at 10:26 a.m. M. On the same day.
The charge under Section 42 (1) of the Highway Transportation Act of 1987 carries a maximum of five years in jail and a fine of between RM5,000 and RM15,000 and a minimum of two years of disqualification from the license.
DPP Hairuliqram told the court that Kan’s reckless action had caused damage to two cars.
As the jail terms were imposed by different courts, it is understood that Kan will serve the jail term consecutively.
According to the account of the events, the victim was fulfilling his duty to turn off a vehicle when the accused approached and insisted on going to the burning car.
The victim asked the defendant to calm down, but he became aggressive and struck the victim’s left arm.
