IPOH: Desperate to get home for Deepavali, a man decided to drive against traffic on the North-South Freeway to avoid a blockade and caused an accident involving two other vehicles.

The 34-year-old was driving to his hometown in Bidor after undergoing a Covid-19 swab test in Klang when he saw a police checkpoint outside the Sungkai tollbooth at around 6pm on Wednesday (November 11) .

Tapah OCPD Superintendent Wan Azharuddin Wan Ismail said that the man, who was driving a Perodua Axia, decided to go against the flow of traffic for approximately 1.4 km to avoid the blockage and cause an accident on the KM355.4 of the highway.

“The driver seeing the barricade, backed up and drove against the flow of southbound traffic.

As he did so, a driver of a Toyota Rush in the right lane was unable to avoid the Axia, crashed head-on and turned several times, while a trailer, carrying glove making machines, was also unable to avoid the car and crashed into the.

“The 25-year-old driver of Kedah’s Toyota Rush suffered minor injuries, while the suspect and the trailer driver were not injured,” he said.

Superintendent Wan Azharuddin said the incident had gone viral and that when police arrived at the scene, the driver had likely already moved his car.

It said the driver had been arrested at his home in Bidor around 11 a.m. on Thursday (November 12) and that the case would be investigated under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act.
